This has to be the prime, if not the only, spot where tourists should visit in Nagano, a beautiful temple it is.

近世以来、天台宗の大勧進と浄土宗の大本願が護持・運営、故事として「遠くとも一度は詣れ善光寺」「牛に引かれて善光寺参り」が有名。度々火災で焼失し、現在の本堂は宝永4年 (1707年) のもので国宝。木造建築の中で3番目に大きいとされ、檜の樹皮を用いて施工する檜皮葺、撞木造りの屋根が特徴。山門 (三門)、金銅阿弥陀如来及両脇侍立像 (秘仏の前立本尊分身)、経蔵、等多数が重要文化財に指定されている。

飛鳥時代644創建。当時宗派がなく現在もなし、誰の個人的な願いでも聞き入れてくれる。1998年長野オリンピックは、善光寺梵鐘の音で開会式開始。今年は数え年で7年に1度の前立本尊御開帳年、本尊同型の前立本尊公開。前立本尊右手と回向柱(えこうばしら、境内の塔婆)が善の綱で結ばれ、柱を触ると本尊直々のご利益を得ると言われる。年間約600万人参拝、長野県民の七五三は善光寺。

【国宝】登録名称は「善光寺本堂」…現在の本堂は元禄十三年(1700)の炎上のあとの再建であって別当慶運が浄財を集め、大工甲良豊前入道宗賀の設計によって宝永四年七月完成。 柱はすべて丸柱で、入側柱が高く、三手先組物で軒を支え、T字形の棟をもつ入母屋造屋根をかける。 本堂は奥行の深い平面を持つ規模の宏壮な建物で、独創的な形状は、仏殿建築として一生面を開いたものと云える。
